Fearless thinking a podcast designed to
0:13
help you navigate authentic leadership
0:15
and the entrepreneurial Journey I'm your
0:17
host Michael duu and these are my
0:19
thoughts lessons and insights from my
0:20
entrepreneurial journey into coaching
0:23
workshops motivational speaking and of
0:25
course what I picked up from interviews
0:27
with inspiring leaders and entrepreneurs
0:29
along the way my mission is to help
0:32
people unlock their untapped potential
0:35
by using fear as a catalyst for powerful
0:37
change and growth so they can step into
0:40
the greatest version of their most
0:42
authentic selves all right let's get
0:45
into some Fearless thinking
0:51
[Music]
1:03
hey Fearless thinkers welcome back to
1:06
Episode 34 I'm your host Michael duu of
1:08
The Fearless Thinking podcast uh this
1:11
week this week this month and next month
1:14
you know we are in pre-launch phase for
1:17
the Ascend Hub community and I will be
1:20
talking about and sharing about those
1:21
ideas and those
1:23
Concepts uh here on the platform and in
1:26
these episodes today we're talking about
1:28
embracing the growth mindset and how
1:31
failure can fuel our success and how the
1:35
ascent Hub can help you do just that
1:39
so tackling the topic of failure which
1:44
can send shivers down anyone's
1:47
spine
1:49
um it's always a challenge to be able to
1:52
talk about these things it's always sort
1:53
of a not a struggle but to me failure is
1:55
just not a thing it's a I guess it is if
1:58
you don't get back up and you don't try
2:00
again then maybe that's failure anybody
2:02
that gets back up anybody that decides
2:04
they want to be an aspired entrepreneur
2:05
Mentor leader or executive and decides
2:07
to step onto that Jo that road and that
2:10
Journey um if you fall down and you get
2:14
back up and you keep going then you
2:15
haven't
2:16
failed um and I think you know when
2:19
we're younger and I hopefully people
2:21
today are reframing this this this word
2:25
this phrase for young kids so that they
2:28
understand that's it's not failing I
2:30
think failing failing is not a good word
2:33
we should just not use it because it's
2:35
incorrect and it has been applied
2:38
incorrectly um failure isn't the enemy
2:42
uh in fact it is a great teacher uh that
2:44
and a fuel by the way that can Propel
2:46
you towards incredible success if you
2:48
use it well and use it wisely uh which
2:51
is why I like to call it you know
2:52
falling not failure
2:56
uh fear can be your friend which is what
2:59
I talk about
3:01
you know in my motivational speaking and
3:03
keynote speeches and my workshops and
3:04
coaching to make fear your friend is a
3:07
powerful asset and a powerful mind shift
3:11
by the way to get your perspective to
3:13
turn it around over here and start using
3:15
and treating your fear differently H as
3:20
something that's no longer outside of
3:22
you that's taking over outside of your
3:25
it's now on this side of your future
3:27
proof committee committee at the table
3:29
with you help and guide you and advise
3:31
you um we've all heard the saing that if
3:34
say saing we've all heard the saying
3:38
that if you're not failing you're not
3:40
trying hard enough and there's a lot of
3:43
Truth to that I think the more you fail
3:45
the more you learn the more you learn
3:46
the more you grow the more you grow the
3:47
more you win it's just it is the cycle
3:50
of of what we do as entrepreneurs that's
3:52
just it you've got to fail and fail
3:54
often you don't have to fail necessarily
3:57
hard but failing of often means that you
4:01
are eliminating other options the more
4:04
you get down the road the further you
4:06
get down the road
4:08
um so many of us can you know we need to
4:14
reframe our growth mindset so that we
4:16
look at these things differently in
4:17
terms of what bailing and falling look
4:19
like many as many of us can operate
4:21
within a fixed mindset
4:25
um not being flexible and resilient not
4:28
having a growth mindset means that you
4:30
see intelligence talent and abilities as
4:34
fixed traits um and if you have that
4:37
view just I can't imagine that you would
4:39
be an entrepreneur I just don't
4:40
understand how you can do it when you're
4:42
you can't have fixed traits like that
4:44
when you're an entrepreneur you have to
4:45
know that those things are constantly
4:46
changing growing and increasing the more
4:49
you do the work and put in the time and
4:51
get back up and reinvent yourself and
4:54
failure in this perspective becomes a
4:55
reflection of your own worth and and
4:58
potentially just a dead end right uh
5:01
when you when you when you believe that
5:02
it's a fixed trait Carol DW uh by the
5:05
way you should read about her and if you
5:06
haven't heard about her Carol D Weck
5:09
Carol dck leading researcher on growth
5:13
mindset she wrote the book about it you
5:15
know some incredible challenges our
5:17
perspectives in the sense that she
5:18
argues that intelligence and abilities
5:20
are not uh set in stone um these are are
5:24
are developed over time through
5:26
experience and effort and they are
5:28
constantly moving growing and shifting
5:30
and she says that the passion for
5:32
stretching yourself and sticking to it
5:35
even or especially if and when it's not
5:38
going well that is the Hallmark of the
5:41
growth
5:42
mindset um stretching yourself that's
5:45
flexibility that's resiliency that's
5:48
being able to Pivot that's being able to
5:51
have a
5:52
malleable flexible mind and thinking
5:56
environment so that the the gray matter
5:58
up here is constantly reassessing and
6:01
reevaluating and iterating itself and
6:03
the growth mind growth mindset flips the
6:06
script on the framework of the fixed
6:10
trait uh fixed idea right fixed growth
6:14
mindset um in this framework
6:17
intelligence and abilities are seen as
6:20
assets that can be developed through
6:23
experience and effort over time and then
6:25
failure now becomes a learning
6:27
opportunity because as it be it becomes
6:29
a chance to identify your weaknesses I
6:32
mean that's crucial and important and
6:34
ultimately create Stepping Stones to
6:36
success um one of the benefits we were
6:39
talking about every time you do fall or
6:41
fail if you want to call it whatever you
6:42
want to do but if you're learning from
6:44
it you've just gained the understanding
6:46
that that didn't work and there are
6:48
things you can get out of it one I
6:50
didn't do this well I could have done
6:52
this better I learned something about my
6:54
strength or weaknesses here and there I
6:57
had the wrong tool to apply Li I didn't
7:00
give myself enough time to get it done
7:03
there are you so many different things
7:05
you can learn about the experience going
7:09
into it in fact if you have one that
7:11
you're stepping into an experience
7:13
you're stepping into that you really
7:14
want to gauge the data on right you
7:17
really want to check your kpis and your
7:20
Roes rois all those things you want to
7:23
see what you're getting out of it write
7:27
it down write down what your
7:28
expectations are what you're going to
7:29
get out of the experience write down
7:31
what your expectations are on the
7:32
deliverables and what you believe you're
7:35
going to gain both in terms of your
7:37
experience knowledge and understanding
7:39
of where you're headed in personally
7:43
professionally as well as through the
7:44
business and then excuse me once you get
7:47
to the other side of that if for some
7:49
reason it was a falter a fail or a
7:52
fall and you need to look at those
7:54
things maybe it's your perspective on
7:58
what your expectations were
8:00
that led you to the trip up maybe it's
8:02
your expectations about a specific tool
8:05
or asset that you had that didn't
8:06
deliver maybe it's about your weakness
8:09
one of the areas you were too strong
8:11
over here outweighing one of these
8:13
weaknesses and therefore you weren't
8:15
able to to do a good job um these are
8:18
all things you you should be learning
8:19
about yourself if you want to become a
8:21
good leader and a good entrepreneur and
8:22
you want to be successful why not
8:25
um the growth mindset helps us celebrate
8:30
the journey um our challenges and our
8:33
lessons that we've learned along the way
8:35
you can call that your Lessons Learned
8:37
your LL Journal your Lessons Learned
8:39
Journal your robloxs and challenges
8:43
Journal your Stepping Stones Journal you
8:45
know I call mine my Fearless road and it
8:49
is the road that I'm on when I'm testing
8:52
these Waters and my skill sets against
8:55
the world and my ideas and it's a great
8:58
place for me to sort of put all those
9:00
things you know because I do have
9:02
expectations my sister was saying this
9:03
to me you know she is perhaps one of the
9:06
reasons why I felt that way for you
9:07
because you had unrealistic
9:10
expectations and while I understand the
9:12
concept of unrealistic expectations I
9:16
don't think you can go into anything
9:18
without expectations uh my stepfather
9:21
says this as well as you know like you
9:22
know don't have any expectations and you
9:24
won't be disappointed um I don't think
9:27
you can do that I don't think you can be
9:29
an entrepreneur and not have
9:31
expectations of yourself and the
9:33
deliveries of your dream into the world
9:36
I think everyone of us sets up
9:37
expectations now whether or not they're
9:39
unrealistic is another thing right I
9:42
think gauging that what is realistic
9:46
pragmatic and possible against what
9:50
is not um if you write these things down
9:54
regularly when you go into some of these
9:56
test modes or what have you I think what
9:57
you're going to you eventually will mind
10:00
is that you will get a a better
10:02
assessment tool engage for what is worth
10:05
the risk and where you can add a little
10:08
more risk or take a little bit back
10:10
where you can add additional
10:12
expectations or raise the bar on those
10:14
expectations as opposed to lowering the
10:17
borrow and expectations for this
10:18
particular outcome because you've been
10:20
working with not only your particular
10:22
mindset and expectations as you've gone
10:24
along but you now know how to adjust
10:27
those things based on a few of the
10:30
criteria and that's skill set experience
10:33
expectations tools weaknesses versus
10:36
strength people versus resources all
10:39
those different variables that can come
10:41
in that can either help you get there
10:42
and succeed hello the ascent Hub or
10:46
falter and not make it there because you
10:48
didn't have what you needed and you
10:49
weren't where you were you weren't ready
10:50
and prepared to to to to take that next
10:53
step and Henry Ford obviously you know
10:56
great grandfather of of vehicles and
10:58
stuff said the only mistake is the
11:00
mistake from which we learn nothing this
11:03
is you know this is what I say and the
11:06
Ascend Hub will help you learn we will
11:08
help you turn those falters turn those
11:12
fall Downs turn those trip ups turn
11:14
those stepping stones into successes
11:16
into learning methods into actionable
11:19
Workshop brainstorm sessions and huddle
11:21
sessions to help you navigate your
11:24
Fearless Road and Ascend to Great
11:26
Heights uh for your business and to go
11:28
to Launch
11:30
um the Journey of course for the
11:31
entrepreneur it's not a solo flight guys
11:33
it's not we don't do this alone we could
11:36
do this alone obviously 100% but we have
11:39
to understand that we might have all the
11:40
brilliant ideas and the passion and the
11:42
energy but we really have to begin to
11:43
build a team right and that is if you
11:46
don't have and you can't afford yet to
11:48
bring on an entire team the Ascend Hub
11:50
can be that for you we can be your
11:52
internal guide Encompass your uh virtual
11:56
com committee your board of directors if
11:58
you will to test some of these things
12:00
out for you to help make sure you're on
12:03
where you you're on the right path
12:04
you're where you need to go and you're
12:05
heading the right direction right and to
12:07
help you set up those expectations
12:10
fairly and reasonably so that you can
12:12
meet them and exceed them right and
12:16
that's through shared experiences well
12:18
where we'll have uh founding leaders
12:20
fellow founding leaders on board at the
12:22
Ascend Hub who will share some of their
12:25
own particular setbacks and their
12:26
experiences that they overan right it
12:28
might resonate with you where you're at
12:30
immediately and oh wow they just went
12:31
through this holy crap that's amazing I
12:34
I can use that uh right now because
12:35
that's what I'm experiencing learn from
12:37
their stories and share your own
12:39
challenges and experience with us right
12:41
so we can all learn from your
12:43
experiences and we can discover that
12:45
failure is a universal experience and it
12:49
is part of the world of
12:51
Entrepreneurship these Badges of Honor
12:53
that we wear these scars of resiliency
12:55
that we've built even the rewards and
12:57
incentives inside you know we might do
12:58
something inside the SN tub that you
13:01
know I had a
13:02
fail hey man had a great fail this week
13:05
and I want to share it with everybody
13:07
you know let's share those things and
13:09
make turn those fails into rewards turn
13:11
those fails into wins by sharing them
13:14
with other people so that they don't
13:16
have to fall right that's when it
13:18
becomes a win and not a fail um expert
13:20
mentorship obviously I've said before
13:22
we're building the the mentor
13:23
programming inside the Ascend Hub that's
13:25
more phase two and even in a larger
13:28
extent phe three as we begin to get more
13:31
iterative feedback from all of our
13:32
members on what they need in terms of
13:34
Mentor programming but but the
13:36
mentorship will be there you know it's
13:37
just part it's sort of baked in for us
13:39
like I said it's Ragu um this will be
13:42
able to provide our members and our our
13:45
mentors and mentees right with the
13:47
guidance on how to take our failures and
13:50
turn them and adapt them into strategies
13:52
so we can push forward and get past them
13:55
as well excuse me as help develop our
13:59
growth mindset we'll take some of these
14:01
initiatives and tactics and features
14:03
from Carol DW and the way that she
14:05
presented them and put them into curated
14:07
Assets in our libraries our workshops
14:10
fostering a growth mindset through
14:12
practicing some of these things with
14:14
each other um from our our industry
14:17
leaders our practical tools our
14:20
framework for transforming setbacks into
14:22
Stepping Stones right uh and that we
14:25
will be doing together so that's going
14:26
to be amazing so think of it like think
14:28
of history making entrepreneurs like
14:31
Steve Jobs and Ariana Huffington and all
14:33
these amazing people Carol dwag you know
14:36
they all face major
14:38
setbacks um you know even um Alex herot
14:42
who I'm in I'm I'm reading everything
14:45
he's got right now everything amazing
14:47
get it um they had setbacks
14:51
right Alex talks about it on his podcast
14:54
and even Steve Jobs who famous who was
14:56
famously outed from Apple
14:59
and uh Huffington's company collapsed uh
15:03
she collapsed from exhaustion early on
15:06
in her career you know they they didn't
15:08
let these failures Define
15:10
them they used them as fuel they
15:14
embraced a growth mindset chose to rise
15:17
back up analyzed their mistakes and
15:20
learned valuable lessons and ultimately
15:21
came back stronger in fact Steve Jobs
15:24
returned apple and then revolutionized
15:26
the tech industry and upington launched
15:28
a multi media Empire focused on what
15:31
well-being
15:33
wellbeing like that that turned things
15:37
around um so a couple things we're going
15:40
to have you know in the Ascend Hub to
15:42
help you build your growth mindset and
15:44
cultivate your growth mindset are those
15:46
interactive workshops love workshops
15:49
love creating these for
15:51
everybody um I have a powerful creative
15:53
team of individuals helping us create
15:54
really unique and interesting workshops
15:56
so that we can get better engagement and
15:58
really
15:59
um I don't know just create great
16:01
opportunity and fun while we're doing it
16:03
while we're learning right um
16:05
peer-to-peer coaching obviously that's
16:07
going to be available I think you know
16:09
the Baseline of what we're going to be
16:11
offering in there is some one is one to
16:13
many coaching um once you want to get
16:15
further into the smaller group coaching
16:18
and the one-on-one group coaching you
16:19
can certainly upgrade and you can pay
16:21
for additional features like that with
16:23
our coaches and our leaders um so you
16:25
can have better access to it but those
16:27
will be available in the larger sessions
16:29
as well as accountability
16:31
Partners um one of the things I think I
16:33
always do better is if I have
16:34
accountability partner I always know I'm
16:35
going to succeed better because I've got
16:37
people to answer to when it's just me
16:40
I'll slip you know what I mean when it's
16:42
just me I might rationalize a few things
16:46
that aren't really in the best interest
16:48
of of the Target that I'm trying to go
16:50
after and having an accountability
16:52
partner inside the ascent Hub helps us
16:55
helps support us through our setbacks
16:57
keep us on on our growth Minds set right
16:59
celebrate our wins and and then make
17:02
make sure that we're we're headed where
17:03
we need to go that we're going to get
17:04
there successfully so remember you know
17:07
failure is inevitable but the ascent Hub
17:10
will be with you and guiding you and on
17:12
your side every step of the way helping
17:14
you build that growth mindset fueling
17:16
your journey and helping you transform
17:18
your setbacks into powerful stepping
17:20
stones and launches for your future and
17:22
your entrepreneurial dreams so remember
17:24
share your setbacks with us hasht
17:27
setbacks growth set launch and hashtag
17:32
hashtag me to the power of we put it in
17:36
there I want to see what you guys have
